WISCONSIN: The number one spot for muskies… the World! Most people agree and recognize that the State of Wisconsin has many noteworthy attractions, including its vast natural forests, interesting wildlife, cool dairy farms, friendly corner taverns, the Green Bay Packers, and the fabulous Door county, Peninsula!

Muskies can be found in more than 700 lakes, totaling at least 420,00 acres. That does not include the flowages, and rivers in every part of the State. Most authorities say this is enough reason to call Wisconsin the number one spot in the World to fish for muskies.

Certainly there have been more bigger fish taken in the St. Lawrence River, and even Ontario, but nowhere does the fever run hotter than in Northern Wisconsin, home of the majestic Musky.

Within their own state there was a rather entertaining wrangling between two of the most popular musky hunts in Northern Wisconsin.

Folks around the city of Hayward, up in the northwest section of Wisconsin, were astounded and delighted with the monstrous World record size muskies caught in their area back in the 1940s by Louis Spray and Cal Johnson. Upon an investigation and certification of the trophies, it was enough for the local authorities to begin promoting the area as the “Musky Capital Of The World”.

When the Chamber of Commerce and the resort owners in the eastern Vilas County and Oneida County in Boulder Junction got wind of Hayward’s declaration, they quickly jumped on the band wagon with the claim that more muskies are taken every year than any other similar-sized area in the World. It didn’t take the Chamber of Commerce long to persuade the U.S. Patent Office to grant them exclusive use of the term ” Musky Capital of the World”. That permission was granted on June 8th, 1971, and still stands today.

So, there you have it, the story of “The Musky Capital of the World.” After such a long and protracted battle, it will come as no surprise that to this day, the resort owners and guides in Boulder Junction are proud to offer a first class Musky fishing experience to area visitors. They have to admit and acknowledge that there are other fine Musky waters throughout Wisconsin. The Chippewa Flowage, near Hayward is one such Musky fishery. There are some excellent guides and resorts in that area and hold many trophy sized muskies.

The Chamber of Commerce in had their facts straight when they made the claim
