Spring Coho (The Wild One)

Just after the ice is out in late Winter, and the waters of southern Lake Michigan warm up,  thousands of  Salmon fisherman swarm to the ports of Indiana to troll the shore lines for the “Wild One!, ”  too experience  more fun, excitement and confusion than a power outage at a three ring surface!  Fishing rods go off two and three at a time. Anglers holler, “fish on” while passing rods over and under each other to avoid tangles! If everything goes right, the result is a cooler […]

Spring Salmon & Trout

Trout and Salmon boat-fishing season along the southern shoreline of Lake Michigan usually begins with the departure of ice around mid-February to April. Between March and mid-May, most of the fishing activity occurs within a two-mile band along the shoreline with coho salmon contributing close to 90% of the catch. Most coho salmon stocked in the lake by Illinois, Michigan, Wisconsin and Indiana will stage in southern Lake Michigan in the spring, due to annual migration patterns. LAKERS PCB WARNING

It might be my imagination but the warnings about eating large Lake Trout because of PCB contamination are what throw me off as far as targeting Lake Trout for food. I know they are kind of sporty when jigged up from shallow water on lighter rods and line but I would rather catch and eat salmon and steelhead than Lakers. If memory serves me correctly I believe it was the commercial fishing of Lakers that caused their near extinction along with the lamprey eel. Salmon were not […]

Salmon Snaggers ((Let Them Spawn))

“It is only the inexperienced and thoughtless who find pleasure in killing fish for the mere sake of killing them. No sportsman does this.”- W.C.Prime, 1888 Here is an article I found written some time back….. I feel the same way about this mindless activity! “Every October and November, a strange and gruesome spectacle takes place along the banks of the boat channel in Chicago’s Lincoln Park. Whether I’m riding into work via bike or car I can’t help but ogle the armies of bundled-up men “snagging” […]

OCT 1st ((Chicago Opening Day Snagging))

Recently I saw  some snaggers  lined up around the Lincoln Park lagoon in Chicago, aggressively trying to snag salmon. And it’s legal, from now until the end of the year. Lord only knows why! This form of fishing (If You Want To call it That?), which is banned altogether in many states, is allowed annually from Oct. 1 to the end of the year at the Lincoln Park lagoon south of Fullerton Parkway and in the inner and outer harbors of Jackson Park on the South Side. These […]
